Silk suspension movement signed on the white enamel dial Imbert L'aine a Paris, set in the marble base of a magnificent column, the onyx column surmounted by four seated lions supporting a marble orb with the standing gilt figure. Circa 1798.
Imbert:- Jean-Gabriel L'aine. Maitre 1776. Carrefour de la Roquette 1778. Rue de la Planche Mibrai 1781. Rue des Arcis 1784. The Apollo Belvedere:- Recorded in the Vatican by 1509. It was ceded by Pope Pious VI to the Frenchunder the terms of the Treaty of Tolentino in 1787. It reached Paris in a triumphant procession in July 1798, being inaugurated in 1800 in the Musee Central des Arts. It arrived back in Rome in 1816 and was returned to the Belvedere Courtyard. The column construction The two stepped marble base is Griotte Rouge quarried from Felines-Minervois, France; active in 17th. & 18th. centuries. Ref: fireplace and upper medallion case of Kings interior cabinet in Versailles. The section set with the movement is Portor, quarried on the island of Portor Venere, La Spezia, Toscana,Italy. Ref: fireplace in the library at Chateaux de Compiegne. The main body of the column is Algerian onyx from Ain-Snara. The lions sit on a small section of Patricia Green marble quarried from Vallee d'Aoste, Italy. The orb is also Portor marble. |

Designed by bronzier Francois Vion "Le Retour de l'Amour", symbolising the Lost Innocence. The circular enamel dial with concentric calendar hand and signed Maniere a Paris, striking movement with silk suspension, flanked by a standing female figure and on the other side Amour with a bird. The finest quality ormolu figures and mounts with original fire gilding, on claw feet, on the original grey marble base.
Charles Guillaume Maniere: Maitre 1778-1810 was a bronze worker as well as being a fine clockmaker. Two other examples of his work are in the Royal Collection; one in Buckingham Palace, the other at Windsor Castle. Other clocks by him can be seen at the Palais de Fontainebleu (2) and at the Mobilier National, Paris; Ministere de la Guerre and the Palais du Luxembourg. |

Two train movement with silk suspension and white enamel dial signed Le Roy, Hgr Du Roi, Paris, in a plinth case flanked by a father and his three sons swearing an oath on their swords, the rectangular base inset with a long plaque depicting the ensuing battle.
The case was inspired by a picture by Jacques Louis David painted in 1784 depicting the sacrificial oath taken by three Horati brothers, symbols of ancient Roman valour, before their father holding three swords to stand against the Curati. The base plaque depicts the aftermath of battle where only one of the brothers survives amidst his dying brothers and slain enemies. Examples of the same case can be seen in the Museum of Decorative Arts, Prague and in the Museo de Reloges de las Bodegas Zoilo Ruiz-Mateos S/A. |
